Why hire an interior designer?

Any renovation, big or small, involves multiple experts in their field. You’ve got a General Contractor, subcontractors such as painters and tilers, plumbers, electricians, etc. Perhaps an Architect too, depending on the scope of your remodel. With a great team assembled and so much at our fingertips online, on HGTV and apps like Pinterest, it’s easy to think you’ve got your renovation handled easy peasy, as my 6 year old would say.

But guess what?? The wonderful team you’ve gathered are each focused on their own areas of expertise, and they are likely NOT considering many things that should be taken into account in order to avoid costly mistakes and regrets down the road. A skilled interior designer can help strike a balance between everyone involved, ensuring your desires are met, the contractor is in the know, and all the subs have detailed instructions on what is happening. Nothing derails a renovation more than last minute issues that arise because there is a lack of a plan!

With that in mind, here are a few reasons you may want to consider hiring a design sidekick for your next project:

Interior Designers help you Visualize

Not all, but many contractors won’t be putting together much in the way of plans or visuals. It’s not too common for you to receive 3D renderings or concept boards from a GC, and while they’ll provide samples for your review, the “presentation” may be less than compelling because frankly their job is to execute, not sell the design. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a contractor who has a bit of a design eye, but often that’s not the case. Bringing your contractor a well thought-out plan will save you time and money. An interior designer can put all of this together in a nice presentation so you have a solid understanding of what the final design is expected to be, and the contractor is also aware and able to see the end result.

Interior Designers Get Personal

Designers spend time getting to know your and your family. We ask questions that other tradespeople may not, and we take those answers into account when designing every detail of the space. Do you love Friday movie nights? Let’s be sure to consider where that large TV is going to go in relation to the fireplace and how furniture will be arranged accordingly. Do you have an heirloom hutch you need to include inthe dining room? Let’s make sure there is adequate and uninterrupted wall space for that piece. Do you have multiple kids involved in a variety of sports? Let’s make sure your mudroom has adequate storage for all of that equipment!

These are the things designers will ask in the very initial stages of the process, and then keep in mind throughout the entire project, ensuring your home is not only beautiful but of utmost functionality for you and your family.

We Pay Attention to Detail

In one of the first home renovations my husband and I embarked on in our second home together (before we had much experience in this industry whatsoever), I’ll never forget how much he laughed at me as I acted out washing my face to determine how high the vessel sink should be. It became a thing in every project we’ve tackled. I’m constantly acting things like a mime, trying to determine how things will flow and function. Every project I work on is looked at from this perspective. How will my clients function in this space? This never leaves my mind whether I’m designing a kitchen, bathroom, kids room or back patio. A good designer will consider SO many details. From brainstorming and sketching ideas and floor plans to determine proper layouts, to collaborating with architects, contractors and everyone else involved, to selecting materials, furnishings, and hardware. An interior designer brings creativity, professionalism, and attention to detail that results in a stunning end result and most importantly, a home that WORKS for you.
